October is designated as National Community Planning Month by the American Planning Association (APA) as a way to highlight the role of planners and planning in each community. The month-long celebration is an opportunity to recognize how planning shapes a community and the work of planners and the planning profession in creating communities of lasting value.
This year’s theme for Community Planning Month, “Housing as Community Infrastructure,” highlights the importance of housing as part of our community fabric and underscores the critical role planning plays in delivering the housing and communities needed nationwide.
To celebrate planning in our community, the City of Tulsa Planning Department has partnered with Guthrie Green, Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, and Tulsa Housing Authority to offer the following FREE activities for all ages:
- This is Tulsa – Throughout October, submit photos of your favorite places in Tulsa that celebrate our community. In November, all photos will be compiled in a video and shared on the City’s website.
- Celebrating Community on the Green – On Oct. 17, join us at Guthrie Green from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. during Food Truck Wednesday to participate in fun free activities provided by Guthrie Green, City of Tulsa, the Indian Nations Council of Governments Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), Tulsa Housing Authority, and the Tulsa County Health Department.
- Jane Jacobs Walk – Discover downtown through the eyes of Jane Jacobs, an urban activist and author of “The Death and Life of Great American Cities.” Led by Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, the walking tour will depart at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at the Mayo Hotel.
- Envision Comanche Park Plan Kick-Off – Join Tulsa Housing Authority for the kick off for the Envision Comanche Park Plan. Learn about the process and how residents can be involved. Enjoy family-friendly activities at this fun fall-themed event. Join us on Oct. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Comanche Park, 3608 N. Quaker Ave.
