Tulsa Utility Customers to Begin Receiving Service Line Notification Letters
10/30/2024
As part of the City of Tulsa’s ongoing mission to provide residents the highest quality water and sewer service, more than 145,000 residential water meters will be upgraded over the next several years with new automated water meters. The replacement of City water metering equipment is part of True Reads Program, a joint program that also involves a systematic investigation to categorize service line material and ensure our system is free of lead pipes.
Throughout the True Reads program, the City of Tulsa has created a Lead Service Line Inventory that documents material type for all services, including both the customer and utility sides of the service line. As of October 1, 2024, the City has found zero lead or galvanized requiring replacement service lines. Approximately 130,000 services lines remain that have not been identified yet.
As a requirement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), any utility customer served by a service line of unknown material will receive a Service Line Notification letter in the coming weeks. The notification letter is a requirement within the
Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), which requires water systems across the country to prepare and maintain an inventory of service line materials and to find and remove sources of lead. The letter contains important information on what the City of Tulsa is doing to find and remove lead as well as information on the health risks of lead exposure.
Approximately 130,000 customers served by a service line of unknown material will receive a letter. Letters will be mailed at the beginning of November and will be sent out annually. Customers who start service at a new address will also always receive a notification letter at the time-of-service initiation.
If you receive a notification letter, no further action is required. The City will continue to identify service line material through the True Reads program and update information on the map daily.
The City of Tulsa offers free lead testing for any utility customer upon request. if you are concerned you may have lead in your drinking water schedule a free test by contacting the City of Tulsa Water & Sewer Department at (918) 591-4384 for instructions.
