Due to an isolated and contained treated sludge spill on River Parks West Trail just south of the City’s South Side Water Treatment Plant at 5300 South Elwood Avenue, crews have closed a small portion of the trail until the area is cleaned up.

The sludge overflow consists of digested solids that have overflowed at this location. These solids have been through the treatment process and are safe for land application, but out of an abundance of caution and to create a safe zone for the operation of heavy equipment, City crews are closing the trail to keep the public away from this location.

Crews are cleaning the area utilizing heavy equipment and a sand mixture to absorb the sludge, so the fencing is extended past the immediate spill area to allow for the cleanup effort. All associated agencies have been notified.

The current estimate is for the trail to be reopened by 6 p.m. Notification will be made when the area is clear for pedestrian traffic.
