Martin to Create Interactive Visual Poems and Conduct Workshops for All Ages

The Oxley Nature Center invites visitors to witness the creative process of the Center's new artist-in-residence, Sasha Martin, an award-winning author and poet. Through her work, Martin explores the relationship between oneself and the world, emphasizing nature as a healing influence. Her memoir, "Life From Scratch," was published by National Geographic and has been named "Best New Book" and "Book Club Pick" in People Magazine. Martin is a recipient of several fellowships, residencies, and awards and teaches workshops and classes across the country.

As the Artist-in-Residence at Oxley Nature Center, Martin plans to create a series of interactive visual poems related to stops along the trail system, exploring human needs such as love, belonging, wholeness, and harmony. The collection aims to deepen the hiker's connection with the environment and themselves. It will also include an art book that serves as a trail guide, containing ten original visual poems and space for hikers to write their reflections.

"Nature is where I go to understand myself and the world, and poetry is how I give voice to the healing and wonder that so often happens on the trail," Sasha Martin said. "As Oxley Nature Center's Artist-in-Residence, I look forward to developing a new poetry series drawn directly from Oxley's unique ecosystem, as it relates to our primary emotional needs and mental wellness while inviting visitors to join me on this journey of self-discovery through monthly workshops."

Martin's studio at Oxley will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until September 2024. Beginning in April, the center will also hold monthly artistic workshops for various age groups. To register, please call the Oxley Nature Center at (918) 596-9054.
