Tulsa Parks is pleased to announce that Owen Park, 560 N. Maybelle Ave., will host the Midwestern Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture's (MWISA) Tree-Climbing Qualifying Competition from June 7 to 9, 2024.
This highly anticipated event will gather 50 skilled climbers from across the region, volunteers, and judges for an exhilarating showcase of arboriculture expertise.
"We are excited to host the ISA Tree-Climbing Qualifying Competition at Owen Park," said Anna America, Chief of Culture and Parks Director. "This is a fantastic opportunity for arborists to showcase their skills and for visitors to witness the incredible abilities of these professionals. We invite everyone to come and witness this thrilling event."
Tree-climbing competitions are a unique blend of art, sport, and science. This event provides a platform for arborists to learn about the latest climbing techniques and equipment innovations. The competitions, which simulate the working conditions of professional arborists, feature male and female competitors performing five different events during the preliminary rounds. Each climber will showcase their dedication to the craft, competing for the champion title and punch their ticket to the 2024 International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) hosted in Atlanta, GA, this October.
"We are thrilled to host this event in the heart of Tulsa," Andy Berg, Board President of the Midwestern Chapter of ISA, said. "This championship celebrates the exceptional skills of our arborists but also highlights the craft of proper tree care and maintenance in our communities."
Safety is a top priority throughout the competition. Six trees, each at least 65 to 70 ft. tall and with a robust structure, have been carefully selected for the competition. These trees can safely accommodate climbers. In addition, team members will also choose a designated tree for kids' climbing, ensuring a fun and secure experience for young enthusiasts attending the event.
