A rehabilitation project at the pond in Owen Park, 560 N. Maybelle Ave., is scheduled to begin during the week of March 13. Completion of the project is anticipated in late June.
During the project, part of the park will be closed, including the pond and an area between West Edison Street and West Easton Place, along North Quanah Avenue. Though these streets will remain open, users should watch for large vehicles entering and exiting the park.
This project consists of the following work:
- Dredging and Island Removal:
- The pond bottom will be reestablished to its historic state by removing muck and vegetative buildup, resulting in an average depth of 8 feet.
- This will improve water quality and create a healthier pond.
- Aeration System Installation:
- The existing fountain aerators will be replaced with a diffuser style system.
- The diffusers are specifically sized for the pond and assist with oxygen transfer and water movement, resulting in an overall healthier pond.
- This system is maintenance-friendly and allows for the electric components to be located outside the pond.
- Re-establishing Ground Cover:
- Canopy Raising and Tree Removal:
- Multiple trees have been identified for removal or canopy raising to allow sunlight to reach ground vegetation.
- Turf Work and Repairing Erosion:
- This involves repairing erosion, backfilling, grading, and establishing solid sod through watering and fertilizing.
The City of Tulsa has contracted with Earth Smart Construction for this $488,441.80 project funded through the stormwater utility fee.
