A new crosswalk with signs and flashing lights has been installed on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at East Jasper Street, just south of the pedestrian bridge that was closed in late June. A crossing guard is on duty to help students cross the street on their way to Emerson Elementary School.
The pedestrian bridge was inspected on June 28, and it was closed to pedestrian traffic. Extensive section loss was found in the bridge truss due to corrosion. It was determined that the bridge could not reliably carry its design loads.
After the bridge inspection, vehicle traffic Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was closed for a brief period while the bridge was stabilized in place. The bridge remains unsafe for pedestrian use.
