The City of Tulsa announced today that Kian Kamas, currently Vice President of Economic Development for the Tulsa Regional Chamber, will join Mayor G.T. Bynum’s team as Deputy Chief of Economic Development effective August 1.
"Our team at the City of Tulsa is focused intently on growth and economic expansion," said Mayor G.T. Bynum. "Kian's experience in business recruitment and retention at the Tulsa Regional Chamber make her an ideal addition to our team. We are seeing a surge of corporate interest in Tulsa, and Kian will help us translate that interest into good jobs that reflect our city's renewed ambitions."
“Ms. Kamas joins our team with a strong breadth and depth of experience,” said Kathy Taylor, Chief of Economic Development. “In addition to playing a critical role in Tulsa’s business recruitment and retention efforts, she has steered the Tulsa Regional Chamber’s Manufacturers Council – providing support to Tulsa’s key advanced manufacturing industry. She also co-chairs the Quality Improvement Task Force for the Chamber, helping to lead both internal quality improvement efforts and leading the Chamber’s application for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This experience will be invaluable as the City relaunches the Economic Development Commission and works to update the City’s strategic economic development strategy.”
Kamas will lead the City’s economic attraction and development efforts together with other members of the City’s Office of Economic Development team. “Kian’s talents complement those of our other high-performing team members: Jim Coles, who has strong relationships with Tulsa’s business community, and expertise on local incentives, tax increment financing, and tax abatements; Mike Dickerson, economist and research specialist; and Crystal Keller, who supports retail recruitment and citywide business district development,” said Taylor. “The addition of Kian’s talent and skill set will help our team more effectively tackle large-scale projects for the City, as well as meet the increased development interest we are seeing in Tulsa.”
"It's an honor to have the opportunity to join such a dynamic team in the Mayor's Office,” said Kian Kamas. “I've had the pleasure of working with city staff over the course of the past six years, and I couldn't be more excited to work alongside each of them to help ensure Tulsa is adequately prepared to take advantage of the opportunities I am confident we will see in the coming months and years. In order to be successful against those cities with which we most frequently compete for jobs and capital investment, Tulsa must know how to best utilize the economic development tools we currently have at our disposal, as well as work to research and develop new tools most relevant to a 21st century economy."
“As a former colleague, I am thrilled to be able to work alongside Kian again as an integral part of the Mayor’s team,” said Nick Doctor, Chief of Community Development and Policy. “Kian is one of the Tulsa community’s sharpest minds in economic development, community building, and policy analysis. Her addition will strengthen our team’s ability to comprehensively grow the economic prosperity of our community.”
Kamas holds a Master of Science in Comparative Public Policy from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Oklahoma and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute. She grew up in Okarche, Oklahoma, and has lived with her husband in Tulsa for the past eight years.
