Flatten, Recycle Cardboard in Blue Carts Following Holiday Purchases
As holiday shopping season is in full swing, many Tulsa residents are left with a mountain of cardboard boxes from online orders and gifts.
The City of Tulsa encourages residents to recycle these boxes responsibly by flattening them and placing them in their blue recycling carts. By properly recycling cardboard, residents can help reduce waste and keep Tulsa clean during this busy time of year.
Cardboard is one of the most commonly recycled materials, and it plays an important role in the City’s sustainability efforts. For cardboard to be recycled efficiently, it must be flattened and free of any packing materials such as plastic, Styrofoam, or bubble wrap. Please note, everything in your blue cart SHOULD NOT be bagged. Only recyclables should be placed in the blue cart.
“We know that the holiday season results in a significant increase in the number of cardboard boxes in our residents’ homes,” said Philip Eakes, Refuse and Recycling Manager for the City of Tulsa. “We want to remind everyone that recycling these boxes is one more way you can make a difference by decreasing your produced waste—just flatten them and place them in your blue recycling cart. By doing so, you’re helping to reduce landfill waste and contribute to a more sustainable Tulsa.”
How to Recycle Your Cardboard:
-
Flatten Boxes: Empty, break down and flatten all cardboard boxes to save space in your blue cart and make the recycling process more efficient.
-
Remove Non-Recyclable Materials: Make sure to remove all plastic, flex films, Styrofoam and packing peanuts. These items should not be placed in your recycling cart.
-
Place in Blue Recycling Cart: Once flattened, place your cardboard in the blue recycling cart for your scheduled pickup.
By making an effort to recycle holiday packaging, Tulsans can help reduce the environmental impact of the holiday season. Proper recycling supports the City’s waste diversion goals and improves recycling contamination rates.
