The City of Tulsa will receive a $503,000 Byrne Innovation Program Grant for 24-months to implement the 61st and Peoria strategic plan.
The City received $100,000 in 2014 through the Byrne Innovation Planning Grant that led to the creation of a strategic plan for the 61st and Peoria neighborhood. The plan outlines specific data-driven and evidence-based interventions to help reduce violent crime in the community.
With the recently awarded grant, one full-time police officer will be assigned to the area for two years, which will help inform apartment complex managers and residents of effective crime prevention techniques and lead a variety of safety programs for the community.
A portion of the grant funding will also be directed to police overtime to conduct foot patrols within neighborhood crime hotspots. Officers will also help develop safe street teams of neighborhood residents that can work in conjunction with foot patrol officers.
"The strategic plan has identified a variety of community engagement and youth development approaches that can have a tremendous impact in the community," Mayor Dewey Bartlett said. "I encourage all citizens, business owners and community leaders to work with the Tulsa Police Department as officers begin implementing crime prevention techniques and programs in the coming months."
In addition to policing strategies, the grant will help increase the neighborhood's availability of social services, specifically residents affected by domestic violence. A part-time project manager will also be hired for two years to help carry out the specific strategies within the plan.
"I would like to thank the City's Grant Division and the Tulsa Police Department for their efforts in securing both Byrne grants for the City of Tulsa," City Council Chair Jeannie Cue said. "With the hard work of our city departments and public partners, I have no doubt that we will make a difference in the lives of the residents and business owners in this community."
