In relation to the 2019 Arkansas River Flood Event, the City of Tulsa received two awards from the Oklahoma Floodplain Managers Association: The Ronald D. Flanagan Platinum Project Award and the Leatherbee-Robison Education Outreach Award.
The Ronald D. Flanagan Platinum Project Award, given to Oklahoma communities or agencies that go above and beyond in the completion of a specific project, was awarded to the City of Tulsa for its investment in a superlative stormwater management program that helped save lives and property. Based on a “2” rating in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System, the city of Tulsa experienced no flooding in buildings permitted within city limits in the 2019 Arkansas River Flood.
The Leatherbee-Robison Education Outreach Award, which recognizes exemplary accomplishments in education, was awarded to Mayor G.T. Bynum for his efforts during the 2019 Arkansas River Flood Event to educate the public and maintain communication with residents, businesses and all affected parties.
“Tulsans’ response to the 2019 River Flood Event showed how truly resilient our community can be in the face of life-threatening situations,” Mayor Bynum said. “I’m thankful to the Oklahoma Floodplain Managers Association for their recognition of our efforts to keep our citizens safe.”
