October is designated as National Community Planning Month by the American Planning Association as a way to highlight the role of planners and planning in each community. Mayor G.T. Bynum and the Tulsa City Council have signed a proclamation (attached) designating October as Community Planning Month in Tulsa
The month-long celebration is an opportunity to recognize how planning shapes a community, and how the work of planners and the planning profession helps to create communities of lasting value. This year’s theme, “Innovations in Planning,” acknowledges the important role planning plays in addressing and adapting to challenges faced by communities in the 21st century.
To celebrate planning in our community, the City of Tulsa’s Planning and Development Department has partnered with Guthrie Green, Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, and Tulsa’s Young Professionals (TYPros) to offer the following FREE activities for all ages:
- Planning Fun – Find fun puzzles, games and a coloring page on the City of Tulsa Planning web page (see end of news release). Submit your coloring page, and it will be included in the “This is Tulsa, Volume 5” video.
- “This is Tulsa, Volume 5” – Submit photos of your favorite places in Tulsa that celebrate our community throughout October. In November, all photos will be compiled in a video and shared on the City’s website.
- Celebrating Community on the Green – On Oct. 18, join us at Guthrie Green, 111 East M.B. Brady St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during Food Truck Wednesday to participate in fun, free activities provided by Guthrie Green, City of Tulsa, INCOG and the Tulsa City-County Health Department.
- Jane Jacobs Walk – Discover downtown through the eyes of Jane Jacobs, an urban activist and author of “The Death and Life of Great American Cities.” Led by Tulsa Foundation for Architecture, the walking tour will depart at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, starting at Topeca Coffee in the Mayo Hotel.
