Celebrating Halloween with Eco-Friendly Alternates

The City of Tulsa is urging residents to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into their Halloween celebrations this year, in addition to knowing which Halloween decoration items are recyclable, and which ones are not.

Through thoughtful decisions regarding decorations, costumes and candy distribution, residents can significantly reduce waste while maintaining the festive traditions of the holiday.

As part of the City's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and reduce waste throughout Tulsa, the following environmentally friendly practices could be implemented:

Consider Face Painting as an Alternative to Single-Use Masks - Traditional costume masks are manufactured with non-recyclable materials. Face painting offers a creative alternative that reduces waste.

Implement Reusable Candy Collecting Bags - Rather than utilizing disposable bags, residents should use cloth bags or metal pails. These reusable options reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste that is generated.

Utilize Natural Pumpkins for Seasonal Decorations - Looking ahead to the 2026 Halloween season, Tulsans should consider natural pumpkins, as they provide a biodegradable alternative to synthetic decorations that contribute to landfill waste.

"At the City of Tulsa we always want to encourage our residents to find new ways to reduce waste and reduce recycling contamination. Small changes lead to big impacts in becoming a more sustainable city," said Philip Eakes, Refuse and Recycling Manager.
