Dr. Kary Stackelbeck with Oklahoma Archaeological Survey (OAS) will be available Nov. 6 during a media availability regarding Thursday’s geophysical work at Newblock Park as part of the 1921 Graves Investigation.
Dr. Stackelbeck will take interviews in the parking lot adjacent to the Waterworks Art Center (near the baseball field), 1710 Charles Page Blvd. at 9:30 a.m.
Due to expected weather later in the day, the media availability will be the only time to get interview updates on the work at Newblock Park, which is expected to last one day. Following the media availability, media wishing to are asked to stay out of the investigation area.
About the Work
Newblock Park was brought to the attention of the physical investigation team as a potential location associated with the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.
The soil samples collected Thursday will allow investigators to evaluate whether the deposits are potentially consistent with burial features that could warrant further excavation. Some soil core samples will be removed mechanically while others will be extracted with a handheld device. The extracted samples will be analyzed off-site and the results will be provided in a technical report at a later date, along with the results of recent sampling conducted at the nearby Canes area in September.
