This week, field experts are continuing the City of Tulsa’s fourth excavation at Oaklawn Cemetery as part of the 1921 Graves Investigation.

Hand excavation teams from Stantec, the archaeological team assisting Oklahoma Archaeological Survey in their fieldwork, arrived this week.

Underneath the former tree on the southwest portion of the cemetery, field experts have discovered three (potentially four) graves. Field experts will work this week to determine whether any of these graves meet the criteria for further excavation and exhumation.

Backhoe work is also continuing in other parts of the cemetery as field experts work to connect excavation blocks from previous excavations.

The latest update from State Archaeologist Dr. Kary Stackelbeck can be watched on the 1921 Graves Facebook page, @1921Graves.
