VITA Free Tax Prep

Tulsa’s Office of Financial Empowerment wants to build awareness among Tulsans about IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free tax preparation program that helps everyone who qualifies access available tax credits and avoid costly tax preparation fees.

The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. Through VITA, community volunteers, certified by the IRS, help taxpayers prepare their tax returns at no cost and make sure they claim valuable tax credits for which they’re eligible, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). Goodwill Industries of Tulsa and Tulsa Responds are providers of the VITA program for the Tulsa area and will open sites across the city starting in January 2025.

If any of these apply to you, you can get free tax prep help at a VITA site:

Volunteer to be a VITA tax preparer!

While the IRS manages the VITA program, the VITA sites are operated by IRS partners and staffed by volunteers who want to make a difference in their communities.

All VITA volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA/site prior to filing. Each filing season, tens of thousands of dedicated VITA/TCE volunteers prepare millions of federal and state returns. They also assist taxpayers with the preparation of thousands of Facilitated Self-Assistance returns.
