The Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission (GTAHLAC) is a group of mayoral and county appointed volunteers established by City Ordinance. The Commission acts in an advisory and advocacy capacity to the greater Tulsa area to encourage and promote unity, purpose, and understanding among the Latinx/Hispanic people of the greater Tulsa area. The Hispanic and Latinx Affairs Commission is one of six Title V Commissions that represent and advocate for women, Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and human rights in Tulsa.
The Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission is staffed by The Mayor's Office of Resilience and Equity (MORE) and contributes to the City of Tulsa's Resilience Strategy pillar to build an inclusive future that honors all Tulsans and celebrates our diversity. The Resilience Plan serves as a roadmap to address Tulsa's most pressing challenges and seeks to build capacity among residents, city systems, and community partners to build a more resilient and equitable city.
The Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission consists of fifteen members of Hispanic /Latinx extraction, nine of which are appointed by the Mayor, subject to the confirmation of the Council, and six are appointed by the Board of Tulsa County Commissioners.
The commission has 5 standing committees:
Tomás Rivera Recognition of Excellence in Education Awards
The Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission’s Education Committee invites you to nominate top students and community heroes for the 2025 Tomás Rivera Recognition of Excellence in Education Awards. Each year, these awards recognize outstanding Latinx/Hispanic students and community members (heroes) who actively improve and advocate for the education of Latinx/Hispanic students.
Tomás Rivera was a Chicano author, poet, and scholar who was a strong advocate of education for Mexican American students. He was the first in his family to attend college, the first to receive the Quinto Sol Literary Award, and the first Chicano to become a University Chancellor.
We hope to recognize our best and brightest with an impactful ceremony in May.
