City Reveals Name, Logo for Tulsa Wave Park Ahead of Zink Lake Opening
The City of Tulsa made waves this week with the announcement of “Tulsa Wave Park,” a new name for Zink Lake’s whitewater recreational area, which is expected to draw in thousands of enthusiasts every year.
“Tulsa Wave Park will be one of the premier whitewater recreational attractions in the state of Oklahoma, and it’s exciting Tulsans will have this feature on our very own riverfront at Zink Lake,” Mayor G.T. Bynum said. “Tulsa Wave Park will be one of the leading attractions for enthusiasts and visitors from around the area, and I’m excited to showcase the very best Tulsa has to offer.”
Tulsa Wave Park will open with Zink Lake and Williams Crossing, Tulsa’s pedestrian bridge, on Labor Day weekend next week. Tulsa Wave Park be open starting Friday late afternoon, with operations dependent on appropriate water levels.
Following opening weekend, Tulsa Wave Park hours are anticipated from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily. All Tulsa Wave Park operations are managed by the River Parks Authority. Hours, operations and more information about Tulsa Wave Park, in addition to Zink Lake, can be found online at www.tulsazinklake.com
Tulsans may be familiar with what was known as the “Tulsa Wave,” which later became the “Tulsa Wave Park.” Back in the mid-2000s, the name “Tulsa Wave Park” was used for a west bank kayak launch that served as a special experience for kayakers along the Arkansas River. The name was eventually retired but is being relaunched to bring back a small piece of Tulsa history to an area that has been 60 years in the making.
“Tulsa Wave Park will change the way Tulsans and visitors interact with our riverfront and Tulsa River Parks is excited to play a major role in offering another outdoor experience for residents to enjoy,” Jeff Edwards, Executive Director of Tulsa River Parks Authority, said. “We hope everyone joins us at Tulsa Wave Park for opening weekend and we stand ready to make Zink Lake the best experience for the entire community”
The release of the name “Tulsa Wave Park” is accompanied by a logo and visuals that play on the idea of waves and moving water in the whitewater attraction. Bold supporting visuals feature a mix of outdoor themed graphics and designs. This includes various designs, such as Sunny, a home-grown mascot that features a combination of the sun and the Tulsa Flag shield, which helps bring to life Zink Lake's connection to Tulsa.
Tulsa Wave Park stretches approximately 1,000 feet south from just upstream of the new Williams Crossing pedestrian bridge. Wave shapers help create the waves at Tulsa Wave Park in each of its seven play areas. Waves can vary in intensity and can be adjusted for recreational users of differing abilities.
Tulsa Wave Park can accommodate kayakers, surfers, and tubers. All Tulsa Wave Park attendees should abide by posted River Parks Authority rules. Fishing and swimming are not allowed in Tulsa Wave Park and all recreation is subject to use at your own risk.
