Break Board Instructions

Created: This is the month/day the problem was reported to Water Distribution Dispatch.

Event: This is the type of water disruption. This could be:

  • Main Break – when a water pipe fails and a steady stream of water surfaces, bubbles or flows from the surrounding ground
  • Service Line Break – when the service line between the water main and the water meter fails and a steady stream of water surfaces, bubbles or flows from the surrounding ground
  • Leak – when a water pipe or connection fails causing a small stream of water to surface from the surrounding ground
  • Torn-out line – when a water main pipe or service line is damaged due to excavation in proximity of the pipe
  • Inoperable Valve – when a valve fails and cannot be used as intended to control flows in the water distribution system
  • Inoperable Hydrant – when a fire hydrant fails and is temporarily out of service
  • Water Quality – when a customer identifies a taste, odor or visual change to water quality and requests city investigation

Address: This is the specific street address, or best street location or intersection where the problem is located.

Water Off Date and Time: This is the date and time City crews closed valves and isolated the section of failed or damaged water line pipe.

Resident: This is the number of residents affected by the isolated section of pipe.

Business: This is the number of businesses affected by the isolated section of pipe.

Earliest Dig Date and Time: This is the earliest date and time that City crews can start excavating to fix the line. City crews must wait for other underground utilities to locate and mark their infrastructure, so that damage to other utilities is avoided. The actual work start time may vary based on available crews, current workload, and prioritization of work based on severity.

Waterline Size: This is the diameter of the waterline that will need to be repaired. City waterlines vary in size between 2-in. and 66-in. in diameter.
