St. John Auxiliary

The St. John Auxiliary is very active, serving in over 80 areas including guest services, surgical waiting, pastoral care, patient dismissals, emergency room, flower delivery, and gift shop.  In addition to our areas of service, we give directions to guests, escort patients and visitors, provide listening ears and comfort guests, and provide support to the St. John associates.

The St. John Auxiliary also continues our commitment to inspire our future health care leaders through our junior volunteer programs.  Teens range from 15-18 and attend school at 38 of the Tulsa metro area schools, and some are home schooled.  Students shadow professionals, attend classes and training, and assist in 49 of the 80 service areas of the hospitals.  Students have the option of serving during the school year in the evenings and on weekends or during the summer, we host an eight week summer program that is very popular!

Volunteer applicants start by applying either on-line, or request that an application be mailed to them.  Once we receive the application, we review and schedule an interview.  Volunteering in a hospital setting involves a background check, immunization review, TB skin tests, reference checks, and volunteer orientation.  Volunteers purchase their own uniforms.  Placement is based upon the skills and interests of the volunteer applicant and the needs of the hospital.

Our youngest volunteers must be 15 years old and must have graduated from the ninth grade.  We also require parental consent for minors.  Our oldest volunteers are 97, and they are all amazing people.

Most college students and adults volunteer a 4 hour shift once per week, so that they have time for family and other commitments.

Volunteers enjoy a free meal on their day of volunteering, a free flu shot every fall, special volunteer parking, and reduced rates at our associate pharmacy and the St. John Siegfried Health Club.

We do recognize volunteer service at our May General Meeting and Luncheon for Volunteers.  Volunteers earn service award pins for 500 hours, 1,000 hours, 2,000 hours, etc. up to 10,000 hours.
