The City of Tulsa’s Human Rights Commission will host the annual Humanitarian of the Year Award Ceremony on Monday, November 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St.
The Human Rights Commission recognizes deserving Tulsans each year with the Humanitarian of the Year award. This award acknowledges Tulsans whose care for others is evident in their work to promote human welfare and alleviate suffering without prejudice.
This year’s honoree is Amairani Perez Chamu, the Chair of the City of Tulsa’s Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission. Amairani is being recognized for her qualities of a humanitarian through her artistic endeavors, advocacy work, and civic engagement.
“The Tulsa Human Rights Commission celebrates the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly. Whereas reducing inequalities and advancing human rights in Tulsa is central to our work on the Commission, we present the Humanitarian of the Year Award each year to recognize this type of focused work being done by individuals throughout our community,” said Chair of the Human Rights Commission, Dr. Andrea Walker. “Recipients of this award demonstrate a history of embodying empathy, compassion, and impartiality and a deep understanding of ‘the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family.’”
Mayor G.T. Bynum will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony.
