WEEKLY UPDATE * FRIDAY, June 26, 2009 STREET IMPROVEMENTS TULSA'S ARTERIAL STREETS
Note: Access to businesses is maintained throughout a street construction project. During work on one entrance to a business, at least one other entrance will be kept open for customers.
New: South Lewis Avenue, East Sixth Street to East 11th Street: A street improvement project is under way at this location, and construction crews are installing new waterlines. For the next three months, one northbound lane and one southbound lane will be open for traffic, and two lanes will be closed.
This work is part of a project that includes North Lewis Avenue between East Pine Street and I-244, and South Lewis Avenue between First and Third streets, as well as between Sixth and 11th streets. The project includes waterline replacement, limited sanitary sewer work, removal of old pavement, new asphalt overlays and new traffic signals.
The City of Tulsa has contracted with Becco Contractors Inc. for this $4.4 million project funded by the 2005 Bond Issue. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for fall 2010.
71st Street just west of the Arkansas River: Repairs to the bridge crossing over the West Bank Trail are under way, and completion is scheduled in one week. The trail also is closed underneath the bridge. One eastbound lane and one westbound lane are open during the construction, and two are closed.
East Admiral Place, Memorial Drive to 73rd East Avenue: Street improvement work on Admiral between Memorial and 73rd East Avenue is scheduled for completion in late July. Traffic conditions remain the same: one eastbound lane and one westbound lane are open, and two lanes are closed. The surety company for former contractor Horizon Construction has hired Paragon Contractors to finish the project. Completion is scheduled for August 2009.
This $4.6 million project funded by the 2006 Third Penny Sales Tax includes removing (milling) the top road surface and applying a new layer of asphalt.
North Peoria Avenue and East 46th Street North intersection: Two lanes of traffic are open in each direction. Left turns are now permissible.
Street improvements are under way on North Peoria Avenue between East 46th Street North and East 51st Street North. One northbound lane and one southbound lane are open to traffic, and two lanes are closed for four months during pavement rehabilitation on this half-mile. The surety company for former contractor Horizon Construction has hired Paragon Contractors to finish the project. Completion is scheduled for May 2010.
This $3.6 million project funded by the 2005 Bond Issue consists of work on North Peoria Avenue between East 36th Street North and East 56th Street North. Improvements include replacing waterlines, removing (milling) the top road surface and applying a new layer of asphalt. Work at the intersections of North Peoria Avenue with 46th Street North and 56th Street North also includes better storm drainage, new traffic signals, turn radius improvements, sidewalk repairs and installation of wheelchair ramps.
South Lewis Avenue, East 31st Street to East 36th Street: Replacement of a 12-inch waterline is under way, with two lanes open for northbound and southbound traffic. Two lanes are closed for three months during this construction.
In addition to waterlines, this project includes street improvements on South Lewis Avenue between East 31st Street and East 41st Street, and on East 41st Street between South Lewis Avenue and Riverside Drive. The City of Tulsa has contracted with Becco Contractors Inc. for this $4.9 million project funded through the 2005 Bond Issue.
Construction on South Lewis Avenue between East 31st Street and East 41st Street is scheduled for completion in May 2010. The contractor will work on one half-mile at a time. After work on Lewis Avenue is completed, the contractor will move to 41st Street between South Lewis Avenue and Riverside Drive. Construction on 41st Street is scheduled for completion in February 2011.
South Lewis Avenue between 61st Street and 66th Street: Utility relocations are under way in preparation for a widening project on South Lewis Avenue between East 61st Street and East 75th Street. The outside lanes will be closed intermittently during this utility work for the next two months.
South Lewis Avenue between 61st Street and 75th Street will be widened to five lanes. This project, funded by the 2001 Third Penny Sales Tax, will begin in the fall of 2009 after the conclusion of an amateur golf tournament at Southern Hills Country Club.
From 61st Street to 71st Street, Lewis Avenue will be reconstructed to replace bar ditches with curb and gutter. Storm water will flow into a reinforced concrete box designed to drain fully urbanized 100-year flows from Lewis Avenue to Joe Creek. From 71st Street to 75th Street, complete reconstruction is not necessary because the street already has curb and gutter.
Elgin Avenue between John Hope Franklin Boulevard and East Archer Street: This road is closed to through traffic during construction of ONEOK Field, the downtown baseball park where the Tulsa Drillers will play beginning in 2010.
East 101st Street and Memorial Drive: Construction is under way for widening East 101st Street just east of South Memorial Drive. East 101st Street is closed between Memorial Drive and 84th East Avenue for six weeks during the work.
This project is a cooperative effort of the City of Tulsa and Tulsa County, with the City of Tulsa providing the cost of materials and Tulsa County providing labor for construction. Tulsa County has posted message boards in the project area to notify motorists of traffic conditions.
U.S. Highway 64 (Memorial Drive) between the Creek Turnpike junction and East 111th Street South: The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is widening this road from four lanes to six lanes, with sidewalks on both sides. The State of Oklahoma has contracted with APAC-Oklahoma Inc. for this $2.8 million project. The project is scheduled for completion in September.
With more than 40,000 vehicles on this stretch of roadway each day, all lanes of traffic will be kept open during the peak drive times of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. The contractor anticipates much of the work taking place during overnight hours.
